Insider tips for your family holiday in Langenargen

Hits for kids in Langenargen

Langenargen has lots to offer for families with children. Here are our tips for relaxed and happy holidays.

Out on the lake!

No matter whether you take a trip on a large steam boat or a small paddle boat: Your kids will love to be out on the lake.
The excursion steam boats of the White Fleet set off hourly from the Langenargen pier, heading off to the most popular excursion destinations at Lake Constance. Children under 6 years of age travel for free, children from 6-15 years of age in the company of an adult and in possession of the Bodensee-Kinderkarte (Lake Constance Children's Card) pay 4,70 € per day (for any number of boat rides).
For all those who prefer to be the captains of their own small boats, the new paddle boat rental service in Langenargen's Gondola Harbour id the right address: Here you can rent paddle boats in Ferrari design or with on-board slides to make a big splash. You don't fancy pedalling? Then you can rent a licence-free motor boat to rule the waves on Lake Constance.

Montfort Castle tower climb

We can't influence whether or not you bump into a ghost at Montfort Castle, but we do, however, highly recommend that you should climb the tower. Climbing up the narrow spiral staircase of the castle tower is a great experience for children. And, when you reach the top, the breathtaking view of the lake and the Swiss and Austrian Alps on the opposite side is an amazing reward. Further information on Tower Climb.

Lido (Strandbad) Langenargen

Would you like to build sand castles? Or speed down a water chute? Or eat ice cream by the lake? Then the Strandbad bathing facility is the place to be. There you will find a 25m swimming pool, a fun pool with a water mushroom, a water play area, a sandpit area, a kiosk with sun terrace… and, of course, Lake Constance. A beach volleyball field and football pitch are also provided for sport enthusiasts.

Natural lakeside beaches Malerecke and DLRG

The freely accessible lakeside sections of the Malerecke (Painter's Corner) and the DLRG Centre are popular venues for young and old. The Malerecke offers an incomparable panorama, which has inspired many an artist to capture the beautiful, natural backdrop with the aid of brush and paint. Kite surfers love to visit the DLRG Centre during good winds, where they can be seen flying across the water with colourful sails billowing above them.

Playgrounds

Your children play at one of the most beautiful playgrounds directly by the lakeside of Lake Constance, you sit nearby on a bench, from which you can enjoy the beautiful view of the sunset over the lake. A wonderful thought. You will love it - and so will your children. The other playgrounds in Langenargen are also quite attractive, for example the Adventure Playground at the pick-up car park or the new playground in the district village of Bierkeller-Waldeck.

Here you will find the children's playgrounds:
Lakeside promenade, close to Hotel Seeterrasse: NEW 2015 - Wonderfully situated, directly be the lake, beautiful panorama, amazing sunsets
Adventure Playground at the pick-up car park in the Friedrichshafener Strasse: Also suitable for older children
Am Rosenstock / Eckenerstrasse
Andreas-Brugger-Strasse / Steigweg
Gräbenen
Mühlengärten
Untere Seestrasse, near the Fischereiforschungsstelle (Fishery Research Centre): Wonderfully situated
District village of Oberdorf, Sägestrasse
Bierkeller-Waldeck: 2006 newly built playground in the new housing estate

For sport enthusiasts, a small football field and beach vollyball field are located across from the Strandbad bathing facility in the Unteren Seestrasse.

Cycling along the Argen

The Argen is the second largest tributory of Lake Constance. It originates in Allgäu and, before it flows into Lake Constance at the Malerecke, forms the border between Langenargen and the neighbouring village of Kressbronn. Shady cycle routes on both sides of the Argen provide easy-going cycle tours for families. Along the route are a number of places to stop for a rest and cool the feet in the river. However, please be careful of the water level, which can rise quickly after heavy rainfall in Allgäu, causing strong currents. And, if you get hungry after a cycle tour, there are a number of beautifully situated BBQ spots along the river, where you can grill a family picnic.
Further cycle tours for families.

In the Tettnang Forest

If you cycle through Langenargen's district village of Bierkeller toward the north, you will reach Tettnang Forest. A dense forest area, in which the Counts of Montfort used to go hunting. Even today, one can often see deer or larger animals in the forest, although one needs a little patience and luck, because the animals are very timid. In summer, when it's really hot, the cool forest is a great alternative to the lakeside.

Pfahlbaumuseum (Museum of Stilt Houses) Unteruhldingen

Located directly at the at the edge of Lake Constance, the Museum of Stilt Houses in Unteruhldingen has been one of the cultural highlights of the region for the past 85 years. Along catwalks over Lake Constance, you are guided through the mysterious world of the stilt house builders of the Stone and Bronze ages.
23 houses have been built in the bay of Uhldingen, which lies at the edge of a nature reserve, in accordance with constructions erected by earlier settlers living on the lake. These reconstructions were based on findings discovered during archaeological excavations. During a guided tour through the villages, you will find out lots of interesting facts about day to day life on stilt houses around 3000 to 5000 years ago. How old did people become in those days, what did they eat and what kind of clothes did they wear?
A new village was recently reconstructed in the Pfahlbaumuseum. The houses of the ARD television series "Steinzeit - Das Experiment. Leben wie vor 5000 Jahren" (Stone Age - The Experiment. Life 5000 years ago). 13 people, 6 of which were children, lived in these houses for eight weeks in the same conditions as they would have thousands of years ago.
Museum visitors will find answers about life in prehistoric times in the "Haus der Fragen" (House of Questions). The 50 most important questions about life and people living in stilt houses are answered here. The permanent exhibition focuses on everything concerning the people of the Stone and Bronze Ages. There you will also find a large aquarium with fish from Lake Constance, in which a typical underwater excavation is displayed.
But that is far from all. During the holiday season, interesting archaeological films are shown in the Pfahlbau Cinema. The films reveal to visitors how stilt houses are built, how "Ötzi", the famous Iceman, lived and the archaeologists of today come to their results.
Anyone who wants to actively participate and gain some hands-on experience is welcome to do so during the Whitsun holidays and summer holidays (holiday schedules Baden-Württemberg). A colourful participatory programme focussing on the Stone and Bronze Ages is staged for visitors during those holiday periods.
An amazing experience is a visit to the two-day Museum Festival, which is held annually at the end of July.

Old Castle of Meersburg

One immerses oneself in the age of chivalry at Meersburg Castle. According to legend and a record from the year 1548, the founding of the castle goes all the way back to the 7th century, to the era of the Merovingians under the rule of King Dagobert I.
During a museum tour through 28 furnished rooms, one can feel and experience the charm of times long gone. The rooms in which the great poetess Annette von Droste-Hülshoff resided during her visits to Lake Constance, up until she died in May 1848, are also included in this tour. Guided tours of the mighty "Dagobertsturm" (Dagobert's Tower) at the heart of Meersburg are also on offer. The view of the Old Town and lake and upon the impressive timberwork is incomparable. A prison cell from the early 19th century can be seen within the tower, as well as the Renaissance hall with the hidden treasure chamber. And a torture chamber - at the deepest part of the tower - gives an insight  to the methods of jurisdiction practiced from the Middle Ages to the beginning of the Modern Age.
